'The patient is in good spirits'

Syed Firdaus Ashraf

Briefing the media on the prime minister's medical progress on Thursday evening, New York-based surgeon Dr Chitranjan S Ranawat and Dr Farokh Udwadia, chief physician at the Breach Candy Hospital, said in a statement that the patient was 'restful. His condition was stable and vital signs were good.'

Prime Minister Vajpayee 'co-operated perfectly to physiotherapy and sat in bed several times. The catheter has been removed.'

'The patient had taken a good breakfast and lunch. He was in good spirits.'

'We both are perfectly aware of his osteoarthiritis in his right knee and there are no plans at all for surgery on the right knee,' read the statement.

Union IT Minister Pramod Mahajan told the media that the PM had sweet lime juice, upma, tea and coconut water for breakfast. "For lunch he had clear vegetable soup and patala daal-chawal and had chai and biscuit for tea."

The patient is allowed a light dinner.

Mahajan said there were chances of allowing one or two visitors by Friday. So far visitors and phone calls have been prohibited.
