Bhujbal says Centre should have
kept an eye on Rajan

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday said the state government was not aware of the whereabouts of underworld don Chhota Rajan, who reportedly escaped from a Bangkok hospital.

"It is the responsibility of the Union government to look out for Rajan because it was dealing with the Thai authorities in regard to Rajan's deportation to India," Bhujbal said in Bombay.

Neither the Maharashtra home ministry nor the police had any details about Rajan's escape, Bhujbal, who also holds Home portfolio, said.

As far as the state government was concerned it made all out efforts to bring Rajan back to the country ever since he survived an attack by a rival gang on September 15, Bhujbal said.

A Bombay police team, that spent over a month in the Thai capital, succeeded in revocation of the gangster's passport, the deputy chief minister said.

However, the state government's hands were tied up after Thai authorities stated they would directly deal with New Delhi in this regard, he added.

"It is the Central Bureau of Investigation and Interpol's responsibility (to track down Rajan) if reports of his escape are true," Bhujbal said. He said, "It is really a cause of worry for us if Rajan has escaped from Bangkok."

"These underworld dons stay put in foreign countries and foment trouble here," he added.
