Chhota Rajan drugged guards: PTI

Gangster Chhota Rajan Friday mysteriously escaped from police custody in a hospital in Bangkok using knotted bed-sheets after apparently drugging guards, the police said.

The gangster, who was being treated in the hospital for gunshot wounds he received in an attack in September and several associates who acted as his bodyguards made their escape between 1 am and 5 am, Thaliand's deputy immigration police chief Maj Gen Charnvuth Watcharapongse said.

Police suspect that Rajan drugged the policemen guarding him before sliding down from a window of his fourth floor room using the knotted bed-sheets.

The police have sounded an alert and flashed his pictures at all checkpoints believing that Rajan, who entered the country as Vijay Kadam, is still in Thailand.

Two officers who were posted inside Rajan's room and five armed guards posted outside are being questioned, Charnuvath said.

The two officers claimed that they were drugged, he said, adding, "We are investigating every officer there and some hospital workers and doctors... we are suspicious of everyone.''

There were unconfirmed reports that Rajan bribed his way out of the Samitivej Hospital, located in downtown Bangkok, in a quiet bylane.
