J&K militants abduct, kill 5 bus passengers

Mukhtar Ahmad in New Delhi

Four bus passengers and the conductor were executed by militants allegedly belonging to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba in a forest in Doda district of Jammu region late on Friday afternoon.

The attack came just three days before the Centre's much-touted ceasefire is to take effect.

A senior police officer in Srinagar said four militants stopped a bus (JK-02 3725) near the Akhala Dachan bus stand in Kishtwar, Doda district, on Friday afternoon and abducted five villagers and the conductor.

The hostages were taken into a forest 3km away. Late in the afternoon, five of the hostages were gunned down. The sixth person, passenger Roshan Lal, managed to escape.

The five persons killed have been identified as Bhushan Lal, Sudesh Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Ramesh Kumar and conductor Prakash. Ramesh Kumar was an employee of the state food and civil supplies department.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet, though police have blamed the Lashkar-e-Tayiba.
