Sonia-Prasada supporters clash in Lucknow

Several Congressmen were injured in a scuffle between supporters of Sonia Gandhi and those her opponent Jitendra Prasada at the Congress headquarters in Lucknow on Sunday during the voting for the party's presidential polls. Five of them had to be hospitalised.

The situation was already tense when Sonia Gandhi reached the Congress headquarters to cast her vote in the election for the party president's post.

On her arrival, Jitendra Prasada's supporters started shouting slogans alleging irregularities in the election process to which Sonia's supporters retaliated with counter slogans.

However, the sloganeering led to a minor scuffle soon after Sonia Gandhi left the polling station and police resorted to a lathi-charge to control the unruly mob.

However, Sonia Gandhi dismissed the allegations saying they were not correct. She said, "The election is a massive process and we will look into irregularities, if any, after the polls."

About the reported statement of central election authority chairman Ram Niwas Mirdha that he had received complaints of irregularities in the poll process, she quipped, "He (Mirdha) has not said anything of this sort."

Exuding confidence about her victory in the election saying she had full faith in party workers. "Let us wait for the results. I have full faith in my workers," Gandhi said in an informal chat with newspersons at the party headquarters at Nehru Bhavan.
