TMC demands Nedumaran's arrest

The Tamil Maanila Congress Tuesday demanded the arrest of Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran, who is negotiating with forest brigand Veerappan for the release of Kannada film star Rajakumar, charging him with espousing the cause of a separate Tamil state.

S Balakrishnan, leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, said Nedumaran had hoisted the "Tamil liberation flag" at Veerappan's jungle hideout.

Referring to newspaper reports that official emissaries R R Gopal, Nedumaran and two others would be leaving for the forest again to meet the outlaw, he said it was a "sensitive matter" and should be discussed threadbare in the House.

Speaker P T R Palanivelrajan, however, rejected his request and said the adjournment motion would be taken up for discussion on November 9.

At this, the TMC, the Communist Party of India, the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the CPI-M, the Indian National League and the All-India Forward Bloc members staged a walkout in protest.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, replying to Balakrishnan's charge that Nedumaran had hoisted the Tamil liberation flag at Veerappan's hideout, said the flags were there even before Nedumaran went to the forest and this was clear from photographs published in Nakkeeran magazine.
