Villagers thrash sub-inspector for raping Dalit woman

A sub-inspector of police was first beaten up and then jailed for raping a Dalit woman in a village under the Bilhaur police circle in Kanpur.

What seems to have amazed all and sundry about Monday night's incident was the courage mustered up by the villagers to "teach the guilty police official a lesson".

The sub-inspector was given a sound thrashing, stripped and paraded naked in the village.

Confirming the incident, Dilip Trivedi, deputy inspector general of police of Kanpur range, said, "Sub-inspector R N Pandey and two constables were on night patrol duty in Dalelpur village. After getting drunk, he grabbed the first one who caught his roving eye."

Trivedi went on to narrate how the sub-inspector forced himself into the woman's house on the pretext of carrying out a "search" . The woman's brother-in-law, Sipahilal, who was also present in the house was taken away by one of the constables for "interrogation", while the sub-inspector ordered the woman to accompany him to the police station. "However, according to the report lodged by the victim, the officer dragged her to a nearby field and raped her," Trivedi said.

Repeated cries by the helpless woman drew the attention of two other residents of the village, Ashiq Ali and Abrar Ahmed, who came out to rescue her. Meanwhile, Sipahilal too managed to free himself from the constable and raised a further alarm that drew a large chunk of the other villagers.

"The sub-inspector was then given a taste of the villagers' wrath as they beat him up, tore off his clothes and paraded him naked," Trivedi said.

Following confirmation of rape by medical experts who examined the victim, the sub-inspector was produced in court on Wednesday morning and then sent to jail under the court's directives.
