Sena MPs to meet Advani

The Shiv Sena's 15 Lok Sabha MPs will meet Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Wednesday evening, hours after the party's three ministers at the Centre submitted their resignations.

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Suresh Prabhu was the first to resign from the Cabinet. Prabhu resigned after the Maharashtra government declared on Tuesday that Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's arrest is imminent. He was followed by Heavy Industries Minister Manohar Joshi and Minister of State for Finance Eknath 'Balasaheb' Vikhe-Patil.

The Sena MPs, sources told rediff.com, will make every effort to persuade the central government to stop Thackeray's prosecution in the 1992-93 riots case.

The case was registered by the Bombay police against Thackeray eight years ago for his articles in the Sena daily, Saamna.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader in the Maharashtra assembly and former chief minister Narayan Rane has sought an appointment with Governor Dr P C Alexander to apprise him of the likely problems the state may face if Thackeray is arrested. However, the governor is out of Bombay, and hence the meeting is unlikely to take place today.

However, Rane and other Opposition legislators will meet Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to discuss the issue.
