Threats will not shatter DF government: Deshmukh

E-Mail this report to a friend

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh asserted on Sunday that the ruling coalition in the state would not be "shattered" by threats of dismissal of his government by Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray.

"My government has already taken a decision [to prosecute Thackeray] and I have done my job. They [the Centre] are free to do their job," Deshmukh told reporters on the eve of the monsoon session of the state legislature.

"This government is not going to be shattered by threats from the Sena chief," he added.

Deshmukh said the government has enough justification to reopen the delayed case against Thackeray, but refused to divulge details. "The government will give the reasons in court."

Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, also present on the occasion, said no time frame has been fixed for Thackeray's arrest. "Appropriate action will be taken at an appropriate time," he said.

Deshmukh admitted having received calls from Union ministers to seek more information about the government's move. But the government had had no communication with the Centre in this regard, he said.

Asked about the law-and-order scenario in the state in the wake of the government's decision, Deshmukh said, "The situation is fine, calm and quiet."

He emphasised that the "law will take its own course".
