Sonia visits Bombay landslide victims

Congress president and opposition leader Sonia Gandhi today visited the Azad Nagar shantytown in Ghatkopar, Bombay, where 65 people died in a landslide on Wednesday, following heavy rain in the city.

Excavation work nearly halted during Sonia Gandhi's visit. Municipal Commissioner V Ranganathan explained how the rock face had collapsed, killing the people in the shantytown below.

Sonia Gandhi met affected people at a local madarssa and handed out cheques of Rs 25,000 to the next of kin of the dead. She later visited Rajawadi hospital, where 30 others are being treated. She assured them of all support.

She later said the Maharashtra government would facilitate house those displaced.

Besides the municipal commissioner, Sonia Gandhi was accompanied by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Govindrao Adik and Bombay Regional Congress Committee chief Murli Deora.
