PM assures religious minorities of protection

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee assured a delegation of heads of various Christian denominations, which called on him on Sunday, that the Centre would ensure that attacks against minorities did not recur.

The Centre had already taken effective steps to curb such attacks, he told the delegation led by the supreme head of the Malankara Church, Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, the religious heads later told reporters in Kottayam.

The prime minister, on the last day of his week-long holiday at the Taj Garden Retreat at Kumarakom, also assured the religious heads that the Centre would devise a mechanism to see that the prices of agricultural products did not slump.

The religious heads told Vajpayee that the agriculture sector in Kerala was facing a deep crisis as a result of the falling prices of produce.

Others who called on the prime minister included Kerala Chief Minister E K Nayanar, Union Minister of State for Railways O Rajagopal, state BJP president C K Padmanabhan, Socialist National Democratic Party general secretary Vellapalli Natesan, Swami Athuradas, Swami Narendra Saraswati and state Jana Shakti president Madavana Balakrishna Pillai.
