Delhi councillor alleges harassment

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Municipal councillor Mohammad Asif Khan, who led a protest against the Delhi police action against 'militants' at Batla House in Jamia colony, is now seeking protection against police harassment.

"Since I raised a voice against the police action, in which an alleged militant was arrested and one was gunned down in a fake encounter, the police have started an inquiry against me and they are harassing my supporters," Khan told rediff.com.

He is now planning to sit on a dharna to protest against the harassment. "If what they say is true, why did they kill the boy? They should have arrested and interrogated him. This is not the way the Delhi police functions. They picked up three boys from a flat at Batla House on December 6 around 01:30 hours IST and later brought back one of the boys and killed him in cold blood," he alleged.

He said that mohalla, from where the boys were picked up, witnessed the incident. "When the boys were taken away, the mohalla saw it. When they came back at 05:00 hours and killed the young boy, the people were awake. The Red Fort shootout was a shame on us and we should have done a proper investigation. Now, they have a boy under arrest and they are making him say all sorts of things, including that I used to visit his computer centre. They are out to get me because I am leading the voice of the people against the police action," said Khan.

He refused to admit that the victim was a militant. "I do not know his identity, but I know that they killed a young boy in cold blood," he charged.

Where are the parents of Abu Shamal? Have they come down from Amroha, as claimed by local residents? "I never said that the boy belonged to Amroha. Nobody has turned up to say that the boy was known to them. All that we know is that a life has been lost in a fake encounter," he alleged.
