TN cyclonic storm to hit coast
between Tuticorin and Kanyakumari

The cyclonic storm over the south Tamil Nadu coast has intensified into a 'very severe cyclonic' storm and is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu coast between Tuticorin and Kanyakumari some time on Wednesday night, according to the area cyclone warning centre in Madras.

The storm is at present 50 kms off the Tuticorin coast and moving in a westerly direction.

It might lead to a surge in tides to heights of 1.5 to 2 metres above normal, inundating low-lying areas, according to the India Meteorological Department in Pune.

The area cyclone warning centre in Madras has warned that the cyclone will cause heavy damage in the areas on its expected path. Standing crops in the southern delta will be one of the casualties.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture out into sea along and off south Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala coast during the period, an IMD release had warned on Wednesday.

Gales with speed reaching 140 to 160 kmph are likely hit coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala due to the cyclone, the release said.

Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in coastal districts of south Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 36 hours, it added.
