Nepalese call for general strike on Thursday

The protesters have called for a general strike on Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Poudel appealed over national television and radio for calm and called on the protesters to refrain from further violence.

"The government is ready and willing to get into dialogue with all political parties and student groups to resolve the situation and bring back peace," Poudel said.

However, representatives of the main opposition United Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Nepal met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and sought Poudel's resignation. Poudel is also the interior security minister.

Meanwhile, the rioting spread to the capital on Wednesday virtually shutting down the city. Public transportation was halted and police, fire-fighters and ambulances crowded the smoke-filled streets trying to put out tire and tree fires.

Indian business establishments were vandalised and windows of the State Bank of India branch were smashed as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets shouting slogans against Hrithik Roshan and India.
