'Some decision' to strengthen ceasefire
in the offing: Advani

Home Minister L K Advani on Friday indicated that 'some decision' could be taken 'soon' to strengthen the Ramzan ceasefire peace initiative and said India is prepared for talks with Pakistan if violence reduced drastically in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Government is monitoring the situation closely and hopes that some decision will soon be taken to strengthen the peace initiative," Advani told a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his ministry.

Maintaining that there has been a 'perceptible' change in the situation after the announcement of the ceasefire, he said the infiltration activities from across the border had also come down and militant activities had declined.

"Pakistani shelling has also come down," he said, according to an official release.

Stating that the Ramzan ceasefire was another opportunity for Pakistan to take positive steps so that peace talks could be considered, the minister said, "If violence comes to an end or is reduced drastically, New Delhi is prepared for talks even with Pakistan. But we do not contemplate any tripartite talks."

The home minister said militancy in the state was essentially a proxy war incited 'by our neighbour' and was not indigenous.
