Security guards of politicians join stir

Personal security guards of senior political leaders in Manipur on Tuesday joined the 'weapons down' strike by Manipur Rifles' jawans intensifying the five-day stir.

Official sources said personal security guards belonging to First and Second Manipur Rifles battalions have joined the ranks of striking jawans demanding payment of arrears of house rent and special compensatory allowances.

Due to non-availability of security guards, the movement of senior leaders, including former chief minister Rishang Keishing and chairman of the hill areas committee C Doungel, has been restricted, the sources said.

The government has instructed the Director General of Police to provide security guards for key installations and VIP security.
