Anantnag siege ends
6 CRPF men, 2 ultras killed

Six Central Reserve Police Force personnel and two militants were killed in a 22-hour-long encounter which followed the storming of a CRPF camp in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir by ultras at around 1700 hours (IST) on Monday, an official spokesman said.

A CRPF jawan and a militant of the suicide squad of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba were killed on Monday evening when the two militants stormed the camp located in a defunct cinema hall at Ashajipora.

Five CRPF personnel and one militant were killed and six other CRPF men and an army jawan were injured after the encounter resumed early on Tuesday after a night-long lull, the spokesman said.

Security personnel, who had laid siege around the camp from outside immediately after the militant attack, entered the building where the holed up militant had taken shelter on Tuesday.

Perched on top of the multi-storied building, the lone militant was able to restrict the movement of some CRPF personnel trapped inside, the spokesman said.

He said the militant, after putting up stiff resistance, was gunned down around 1500 hours on Tuesday, ending the 22-hour long gun-battle.

One of the killed militants was identified as Abu Hizbullah Hamza, the spokesman said, adding two AK assault rifles, a wireless set, a grenade, ten magazines and 35 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain ultras.

The army, which had been called in to assist the CRPF, supervised the operation.

This was the first incident of its kind since the Ramzan ceasefire came into effect on November 28.

It was also the first incident in which the army had to be called in to assist paramilitary forces to flush out militants after the suspension of combat operations by all security agencies in J&K.

Meanwhile, the army foiled another suicide attack in Cherkote area in the frontier district of Kupwara late on Monday night, shooting dead one of the two Lashkar militants who attempted to storm Devar post, a defence spokesman said.

He said troops noticed two militants attempting to sneak into their camp at Devar and challenged them.

The militants opened fire and in the retaliatory action, one of them was killed while the other escaped, he said.

He said troops suffered no casualty in the encounter.
