12 killed, 27 injured in Srinagar blasts

At least 12 people - 10 securitymen, one journalist and another civilian -- were killed and 27 injured as two bombs went off successively in the heart of Srinagar this afternoon. The journalist has been identified as Pradeep Bhatia of The Hindustan Times.

The blasts took place at Residency Road near Kothibagh police station.

The first blast, a minor one, which took place outside the State Bank of India branch at Regal Chowk, was suspected to be a grenade. The second major one soon followed, after a crowd of armymen and journalists had gathered at the spot. It is suspected to be a landmine.

This was followed by a heavy exchange of fire between security forces and the militants The security forces have launched a major search and cordon operation, when reports last came in.

Two police officers -- Pankaj Dar, SP east and SHO Altaf Ahmed -- and are being operated upon at the Army Hospital.
