Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least two students were killed and 28 others injured in a grenade attack by militants and subsequent firing by the Border Security Force at Iqbal Market in Sopore town, north Kashmir, this afternoon.

Police sources told rediff that 17 of the injured were shifted to Srinagar's SMHS hospital in a serious condition. Two very critically injured persons were shifted to the Soura Medical Institute.

The sources said some militants lobbed a hand-grenade at a passing security force vehicle in Iqbal Market. The grenade exploded on the street, killing the two children and injuring some bystanders.

BSF troopers manning bunkers nearby retaliated with automatic weapons, resulting in injures to some bystanders.

The two students were identified as Rubeena Akhtar, a student of the 8th standard, and Abdul Qayoom, a first-year college student.

Tension gripped the entire town and security forces sealed the area and mounted a search. A local contact reached by telephone said shopkeepers downed their shutters in panic and the streets were deserted.
