ISI agent shot dead in Andhra Pradesh

E-Mail this report to a friend

D Padma in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh police claim to have shot dead an agent of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Thursday evening in Jagityal town of Karimnagar district.

The slain, Azam Ghori, is believed to have been involved in several offences in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The encounter occurred near a bus stand. A special police team from Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts intercepted Ghori while he was proceeding on a bicycle.

The 30-year-old, who has been evading the police dragnet for several months, immediately whipped out a pistol and fired, but was killed in the retaliatory firing.

Ghori was wanted by the police of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh for his involvement in a series of murders and bomb blasts. The AP police also suspect him to have been behind a series of low-intensity bomb explosions at a cinema theatre, police station and other places in Hyderabad early this year.

He is also said to be involved in the murder of Devinder, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist, in the city recently.

Unconfirmed reports say that Ghori was a prominent member of the dreaded Kashmiri militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba. However, the district police said he has been identified as the commander of a little-known outfit, the Indian Muslim Mohammadi Mujahadeen.

The police recovered a Chinese-made 9mm pistol and 200 gm of explosive material, believed to be RDX, from the slain terrorist.

Based on the specific information that Ghori was moving around in the district, a special police party, comprising Intelligence Bureau sleuths and anti-extremist personnel, was deployed to trace him. A close watch was kept in and around Jagityal town, which is also affected by Naxalite activity, to track him down.

Following the incident, a general alert has been sounded across the state to prevent retaliatory attacks from ISI-backed organisations, the police said.
