Plans On For International Meatless Day

E-Mail this information to a friend

R V Sarma in Atlanta

Sadhu T L Vaswani's 120th birthday will be celebrated at scores of Vaswani centers on November 21st. In Atlanta, devotees will meet at 1 pm at the East Roswell Park, in Roswell. As part of the Sheva program for this celebration, the association has started the Annual Blanket Drive. The blankets will be distributed to the homeless and needy, in Atlanta and India.

As a mark of respect to Sadhu Vaswani, whose birthday falls on November 25, a meatless day/animal rights day will be observed.

Last year at least seven million people sent to Sadhu Vaswani mission their individual pledges undertaking to observe November 25 as Meatless Day. The mission wants to increase that number by a few millions this year, this being the last year of the millennium, the organizers say.

In 1986, it was proposed that November 25 would be celebrated as International Meatless Day.

Vaswani devotees point out that four state governments in India -- Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra -- have issued instructions for the closure of slaughter-houses as well as butchers's shops on November 25 every year.

To create awareness about the Meatless Day campaign, peace marches are held in Pune and other cities in November every year. Thousands of students from city schools and colleges march through the streets propagating the idea of Meatless Day and reverence for all life, as the first step to world peace, the organizers say.
