Piyush Patel On At TiE Atlantic Event

Piyush Patel, chairman and CEO of Cabletron Systems, a $ 1.5 billion firm, will address members and associates of the TiE Atlantic on successful strategies for start-up companies. Patel, one of the most respected leaders in the Internet business, is one of the founders of YAGO Systems, which was launched four years ago. Cabletron acquired YAGO two years ago.

The November 29 meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, and starts at 6.30 pm with social hour, followed by dinner, and Patel's address at 9 pm. An hour of networking follows.

Cabletron Systems, a premier provider of world-class networking solutions, provides millions across the world with network access and communications. With scaleable products designed for Global 1000 enterprise networks, service providers and small businesses, Cabletron is the e-business communications specialist in the emerging Internet economy.

Cabletron, with 5,500 employees in 27 countries, is the market leader in Layer 3 switching, with a commanding 29 per cent share of the market, and it holds the number one position in the DSL market.

Before being appointed chairman and CEO, Patel served as Cabletron's senior vice-president of worldwide engineering, and oversaw the company's realignment around its four core businesses: the enterprise, service provider, network management/software and professional services.

Under his direction, Cabletron, based in the Rochester, New Hampishire, has been leveraging its strengths in the enterprise market to increase its market share in worldwide switching.

Patel has more than 20 years experience in the high technology industry. He served in technical and management roles at companies including Intel, Sun Microsystems, MIPS Systems, QED and YAGO Systems. At these companies, he had a key role in strategic marketing and business development, driving product definition and business partnerships. He played an important role in the completion key microprocessors including Intel's x86 and Sun's UltraSparc processors.

In 1996, he was one of the founders of YAGO Systems. As its chief executive officer, Patel led efforts that resulted in the development of the award-winning Layer 3 switch router; one of the highest-performance, lowest-cost solutions for addressing the bandwidth demands being placed on networks today.

Patel holds a master's degree in engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

TiE, based in Silicon Valley, has chapters in half a dozen American cities. Apart from encouraging networking among South Asian entrepreneurs, TiE, through its monthly meetings and annual convention offers insights into starting new businesses and giving focus to the existing ones. It is also an organization that takes pride in its mentoring role, and offering advice about angel investors.

The admission for the November 29 event costs $ 15 for students, $ 15 for members and $ 20 for their spouses, and $ 35 for each non-member and his or her spouse.
