Gejdenson blasts Bush for defending Pak coup

E-Mail this report to a friend

Ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee Sam Gejdenson has criticised as ''dangerous and irresponsible'' Texas Governor George W Bush's comments supporting the military coup in Pakistan.

''Governor Bush's statement last night that the military coup in Pakistan would lead to stability in South Asia is alarming and dangerous,'' Gejdenson said last night.

''For a candidate for the president of the United States and leader of the free world to condone a military takeover of a democratically elected government shows a lack of commitment to the democratic principles and the core values upon which this country was founded,'' he added.

Gejdenson, who sponsored a resolution condemning the military coup, called on Bush to reconsider his position.

''In the interest of peace and stability on the subcontinent and around the world, I would urge Gov Bush to reconsider his position,'' Gejdenson remarked.
