A Staff Writer in San Francisco

Trikone, the 12-year-old group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered South Asians, has appointed Sandip Roy as co-chair. He joins incumbent Madhuri Anji as co-chair for 1999. Roy also serves as the editor of Trikone magazine, a quarterly that reaches over 20,000 readers from South Asia. Trikone is the oldest group of its kind in the world and its activities have been reported in many major mainstream newspapers and magazines.

Roy grew up in Calcutta and has been involved with Trikone since moving to the Bay Area nine years ago. He was awarded the Media Visibility Award for his work with Trikone by the Living Well Project in 1997. He has contributed to various anthologies like Q and A (Queer and Asian), Contours of the Heart, Men on Men 6, A Part Yet Apart and Queer View Mirror. He is the features editor for India Currents magazine and has also written for A Magazine, The Bay Area Reporter, Pacific News Service, Frontiers, Windy City Times, etc.

"I was one of the first two Trikone subscribers while I lived in Calcutta," he recalls. "It gave me a tremendous sense of exhilaration to find Trikone in my mail box telling me that there were other people like me all over the world."

"As co-chair for Trikone, I hope I can help Trikone be more visible and more out there so that other people like me can find out about us and realise they are not alone," he adds.

Trikone (Sanskrit for triangle) is a community group for lesbian, gay bisexual and transgendered people of South Asian heritage. (South Asia includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet and the Diaspora).

Trikone offers a supportive, empowering and non-judgmental environment where queer South Asians can meet, make connections and proudly promote awareness and acceptance of their sexuality in society. Trikone actively works against oppression based on race, gender, class, and other identities.
