A Typical Kids' Yoga Class

E-Mail this report to a friend

They begin by chanting Aum and breaking down the sounds. Feeling the sounds vibrate at the lower abdomen, the heart center and the top of the head.

Breath awareness. Practising inhaling and exhaling. Adding arm movement to breath. Doing exercises such as Wing Breath and Helicopter Breath.

Beginning with some asanas -- many times they practise asanas, which are named after things in nature, so we can relate a story to what we are doing.

Some examples would be Simhasana (lion pose), Vrksasana (tree pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra pose), Tarasana (star pose). They then do some poses in pairs or groupings. Maybe play a game where you make up your own asana or see who can hold an asanathe longest.

Then they sit for a few minutes of meditation -- they call it inner stillness practice.

Then they read a story and have the kids relax in Savasna.
