Sanctions against Pak: US denies report

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Clinton administration has dismissed as ''too general'' a report circulating in India that the United States is likely to impose sanctions against 17pak.htm>Pakistan if it continues to ignore Washington's call to withdraw forces from the Indian side of the Line of Control.

Commenting on the report, a State Department official said the US was not taking sides, but ''we want to see a resolution of the Kargil dispute, the exercise of restraint and respect for the Line of Control.''

''We believe that resolution of the Kargil situation requires withdrawal of forces by Pakistan from the Indian side of the LoC. We are encouraging Indian and Pakistani leaders to continue direct discussion to end the crisis,'' he added.
