Another Indian official in Islamabad beaten, abducted

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan today said it was investigating an Indian high commission charge that one of its staff members was beaten up and abducted by intelligence agents in Islamabad.

"We have received the protest and are investigating," a Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman said.

Yograj Vij, a staff member of the high commission, was beaten up today on his doorstep along with a guard by more than a dozen armed intelligence operatives before being abducted.

Indian high commission sources said the matter had been reported to the police and a protest had been lodged with the Pakistani foreign ministry.

Last Tuesday, Pakistan accused Indian authorities of illegally detaining and manhandling a staff member of its high commission in New Delhi, Dil Fayyaz. He was expelled the next day on a spying charge that Pakistan rejected.

India said the next day that an employee of its high commission in Islamabad had been abducted and beaten by Pakistani intelligence agents before being released.

The report of today's incident came after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief met United States President Bill Clinton in Washington to discuss ways to end the worst Indo-Pak standoff in almost 30 years.
