Seeking Right Meaning

SANTA CLARA

Is one Indian American or Asian American or just American? What have our community learned from the struggle of other ethnic communities? How do we relate to other communities? These are some of the thoughts that will be explored in the play Water Colors to be staged here on August 29. It is the first production of Arth, a South Asian theater group, interested in intergenerational and inter-racial phenomena. The Indian Community Service Center is co-sponsoring the event.

The play will be performed at 4 pm at the Mayer Theater, Santa Clara University. Admission, $ 8, general and $ 4 for students.

The theater is located at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara.

Asian Connections To Be Explored

VANCOUVER

The University of British Columbia's Centre for Research in Women's Studies and Gender Relations has planned a Symposium and Participatory Forum in collaboration with the UBC Institute for Asian Research and the Simon Fraser University Women's Studies Department at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Called Women's Studies: Asian Connections, it will be held from November 3 to November 5, 2000. But initial proposals for papers and workshops should reach the school by September 10 this year.

The schools invite proposals for papers and participatory workshops focussed on women's studies in Asia. The aim is to facilitate collaboration and strengthen connections between and among women's studies programmes in Asia and North America, Australia/New Zealand, and Europe, researchers working on similar issues, the different Asian regions, and the community.

There will be papers on feminist research and theory and action for change.

The organizers envisage several paper sessions, focussed on themes or issues that intersect different Asian regions. These include feminist theory and activism, policy-making and politics, gender and cultural contexts, health care and sexuality, Gender and globalization, as well as participatory workshops on topics like curriculum development (including distance education), pedagogy and classroom dynamics, community involvement (practicums/ internships).
