Pak has shown no regard for world opinion, says Britain

Britain accused Pakistan of acting in "flagrant disregard'' of world opinion by conducting a nuclear test on Saturday, and demanded that it stop all such activities.

"The tests do nothing to enhance Pakistan's security environment. They further escalate tension and heighten concerns about an arms race in South Asia,'' Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said in a statement, "The need is now more urgent than ever for both Pakistan and India to work to lower tensions.''

The international community is united in its insistence that Pakistan should refrain from further tests, Cook said.

He said next week's ministerial meeting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France -- will be an "important opportunity to get the message across.''
