Pak N-tests created 'new situation': PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee admitted that a ''new situation'' had been created by Pakistan's nuclear tests today but said India was prepared to meet any eventuality.

''The tests (Pakistan's) come as no surprise -- we are committed to maintain deterrence,'' the prime minister told the media as he emerged from Parliament after meeting with his Cabinet colleagues to take stock of the situation.

The prime minister said he has already promised the House that all facts regarding Pakistans's tests would be collected and laid before the Lok Sabha when it reassembles tomorrow.

A meeting would also be held by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies later, Vajpayee said.

The prime minister said the country must stand united in the light of the new situation.

Among those who attended the meeting were Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Jaswant Singh, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, Defence Minister George Fernandes and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha was adjourned this evening after several members said the ongoing discussion on the nuclear tests had assumed new significance in view of the nuclear explosions by Pakistan.
