US denies rumours of visa non-issue

The American embassy in New Delhi has denied "rumours" that two of its consulates -- in Bombay and Madras -- are about to be closed down, and that it has stopped issuing visas to Indians going to the US.

"These are 100 per cent rumours. There is no fallout of the American sanctions against India in the wake of its nuclear tests in this regard," one official insisted.

Clarifying that the visas for software personnel are not being issued since the cap has been reached, the officials said it had nothing to do with the sanctions.
