Gen Malik is new chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee

The baton of chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, changed hands for the second time this week with the government appointing army chief General Ved Prakash Malik to the post.

Following the retirement of Air Chief Marshal S K Sareen, the chairman's post went on Monday to Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, the senior-most services chief.

But yesterday, the government terminated Bhagwat's services.

Adm Sushil Kumar, who replaced Adm Bhagwat yesterday, is just a day senior to Air Chief Marshal Anil Yashwant Tipnis, who took over as the new air chief today.
