Cricket is every Indian's passion. However, quite a few flicks were made with cricket as the central theme in this season, and none of them has managed to appease the audience. Chennai 600028, a first of its kind in Tamil cinema, is a potential blockbuster.
Venkat Prabhu has struck gold with his very first directorial venture, redefining entertainment in a way rarely seen in Tamil cinema. Though centred on cricket, the story includes other aspects as well, thereby appealing to a wide audience.
It is the story of a group of young individuals from a locality forming a cricket team, Sharks. The crux of the story is the Sharks' rivalry with another team called the Rockers, which extends beyond the cricket pitch. The major chunk of the movie deals with the lives of the different members of the Sharks team.
Overall, the performances are laudable. Notable among them is Premji Amaran, with every expression deserving of applause. His timing and delivery are just exemplary. While he took care of the comedy with the elegance of a veteran (not relying on antics), the others played their part with similar fervour. Aravind, RJ turned actor Shiva, Ilavarasu, Sampath and Jai were all equally good.
Ably supported by the technical crew, Venkat Prabhu has done what most established directors failed to do -- keeping the story real without launching into stereotypes.
Sakthi Saravanan's cinematography and B Lenin's editing are also very good. Yuvan Shanker Raja's music has been used to good effect while costumes by Vasuki Bhaskar gel with the nature of the story.
The movie is a result of a perfect team effort in every sense. A perfect entertainer, not to be missed.
