'I thought I would look like an idiot'

July 25, 2006
My role of Langda Tyagi is based on Iago. He is the first literary psychopath who has no motivation for what he does except insane jealousy and disrespect for the colour of Othello's skin. The original Othello is more powerful, in the sense that he is a dark man surrounded by fair people. But here, he is half Brahmin. Beyond that, it is a lack of respect shown to him by the person he works for that motivates Langda to be extremely dangerous. He reads people so well that he can misguide them.

Physically, he is an interesting character. I had a limp, short hair, green clothes that suggest envy, red fingernails and yellow teeth because of chewing paan. I have never done any of these things in my films before. Playing the character was not difficult though. It involved learning the script by heart and I enjoyed doing it. When I first heard about my character, I visualised it the same way it has been conceived. I wanted the character to have greasy skin where you can smell the sweat; where a fly alights on his cheeks and he doesn't even react.

But sometimes, I wish I could go back to some scenes and do them better.

Vishal liked the idea of me shaving my hair. I thought I would look like an idiot, but I now think I would have looked like one if I hadn't.
