Autograph

When [director] Cheran sir narrated the story to me, I very badly wanted to do it because the character was so appealing. But I had date problems at the time. I asked him whether he would wait for three months, and he did.

Cheran sir made me dress, walk, and talk like the character he had visualised. I do not know whether I will get such a character again. What I liked about it was that she was confident, friendly, caring and unselfish; every girl would like to be like her. I wish I were like her!

One of the most memorable scenes was the scene where the girl's mother dies. The director told me not to shout 'Amma',

but to do something realistic. That was one scene I did with a lot of feeling. I felt her pain, but didn't rant or rave. After I finished the scene, Cheran sir congratulated me. Such encouraging words make you work better.

The white salwar kameez and the colourful tie-and-dye dupatta, designed by my sister Sangeeta, became a rage in Tamil Nadu. The dress made me look soft and delicate. Even the earrings and bangles I wore were very appealing. And I plaited my hair in a simple way.

Nobody expected the movie to be such a big hit!
