Ram Gopal VarmaGiven Ram Gopal Varma's fascination for films shot in New York, rangingĀ from The Godfather to Rosemary's Baby, some of his fans may have wondered why he hasn't set any of his own films in the Big Apple yet.

Now, fans will have to wonder what kind of film Varma will shoot there, considering he has about four marked for 2006, all set in New York.

Varma, whose RGV Film Factory, announced last week that it was entering the Indian capital market to raise about $25 million, spent two days in New York early this month to scout locations for a 2006 project. Not many details were announced, as Varma was in town for just a few days, but the grapevine says it won't be anything like Karan Johar's Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna, which means half of Bollywood's biggest stars won't be camping in New York.

It is more likely to be a suspense film. Manhattan will be an integral part of the story, and not just a fancy background for a song and dance sequence.

In recent months, New York has attracted half a dozen Bollywood projects, including the Salman, Preity and Akshay Kumar starrer Jaaneman. Not to forget smaller films like Yun Hota to Kyon Hota, directed by Naseeruddin Shah.
