Sandiyar is Kamal Haasan's next directorial venture after Hey! Ram (2000). Apparently, Haasan decided to direct Sandiyar because he loved the script (which he wrote) and the characters. He did not want anyone else to direct the story because he felt he was the right person to interpret the characters.
