The government has asked the Indian Banks' Association to set aside 6 per cent of the total loans given by the banking sector to members of the minority communities.
In a letter dated January 9, the banking division under the ministry of finance has told the IBA to examine a proposal to set aside 15 per cent of priority sector lending in all categories for minority communities.
Till now Indian banks were required to lend 40 per cent of total disbursements to priority segments like farmers and small businessmen only.
The Bharatiya Janata party has termed this move 'vote bank politics' of the ruling Congress and has pointed out that viability, collateral security and creditworthiness of the borrower should be the criteria for loans disbursement.
