Will BPO scams hit India's boom?

A security-related scandal has revisited Indian call centres, putting the Indian business process outsourcing industry under the scanner yet again.

The United Kingdom-based Channel 4, on Thursday, will air a programme -- The Data Theft Scandal -- which claims that details of credit cards, driving licences and passports are stolen from Indian call centres and sold to the highest bidder.

In June 2006, an HSBC BPO staffer was accused of siphoning off Rs 1.8 crore (Rs 18 million) from the accounts of around 20 customers from the HSBC India centre in Bangalore.

Some time ago, three former employees of MphasiS BFL's BPO operation MSource, and nine others, had defrauded 4 Citibank customers of about $350,000.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies in a statement has said any allegation of a breach in security is extremely seriously and promised action to book the culprits.

Can call centre thefts end India's flourishing BPO business? Do such deeds give India a bad name?

Or do you think that these are just isolated cases and the BPO sector in India will keep booming despite these setbacks? How safe are India's BPO operations, in any case?

Tell us what you think.
