Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder, chief architect and chairman, has done a Narayana Murthy.

The world's richest man has decided to give up his day-to-day role in Microsoft from July 2008, and spend more time at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates will, however, continue as the company's chairman and technical advisor. Ray Ozzie has already been named the company's chief software architect.

Gates will now devote most of his time to global health and education work through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has made grant commitments of $10.5 billion since its inception in 2000.

While making his move, Gates said: 'This was a hard decision for me. I'm very lucky to have two passions that I feel are so important and so challenging. As I prepare for this change, I firmly believe the road ahead for Microsoft is as bright as ever.'

What do you think about Bill Gates stepping down? Will Microsoft be the same again? Will it keep growing at the pace it has been, or will it flounder?

Tell us what you think!
