The Railways on Friday announced the extension of suburban transport project in Chennai and completion of two sections in Kolkata.
Announcing this in the Railway Budget for 2006-07, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav said the Chennai MRTS from Vellacheri to St Thomas Mount would be taken up in this year's Budget.
He said Tirumailai-Tiruvamniyur section of Tirumailai-Velacheri Phase II has already been commissioned.
"There have been geotechnical problem on the remaining section from Tirvamniyar to Velachari, which have been sorted out and this section is targeted for completion during 2006-07," he said.
In Kolkata, the extension of circular railway from Princepghat to Manjherhat has been completed. The extension from Dum Dum to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport would also be completed soon, he said.
For improvement and expansion of suburban rail services in Mumbai, the work of DC-AC conversion between Igatpuri-Kasaraghat section has been completed.
The conversion of Kasara-Titwala section would be completed during 2006/07. Thereafter, the conversion work upto Mumbai Central and Churchgate would be completed in the coming years in a time bound manner, he said.
To meet the growing demand of suburban traffic in Mumbai, Lalu said four additional rakes for suburban services of Western Railways and two rakes for Central Railways would be made available by March next year.
