The wholesale prices-based inflation rose by 0.21 per cent at 4.82 per cent during the week ended August 5, as against 4.61 per cent for the previous week, with some manufactured products along with aviation turbine fuel becoming costlier.

However, prices of essential items, including fruits and vegetables, declined. This is contrary to the recent trend when prices of manufactured goods softened and prices of essential items rose.

In fact, the index for food articles group declined by 0.3 per cent to 203.7 points. Prices of jowar fell by three per cent, while fruits and vegetables became cheaper by two per cent each.

However, the prices of gram, maize, pork, eggs and fish-inland moved up by one per cent each.

The index for non-food articles group declined by 0.1 per cent to 183.8 points from 184 for the previous week due to lower prices of raw jute by two per cent and cotton seed and groundnut seed by one per cent each.

However, the prices of copra and castor seed were up one per cent each.

Inflation had stood at 3.78 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year.
