ASEAN economic community by 2020

The leaders of the 10 ASEAN nations managed to find common ground at the conclusion of the 11th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, despite some severe differences. 

They agreed on the format for the first East Asia Summit, the handling of the thorny Myanmar issue, and the means to manage global issues like terrorism.  ASEAN urged Myanmar to release the political detainees and restore democracy.

They also decided to collaborate closely in the fight against bird flu.  It was also agreed that Asean+3 and not EAS to be the main vehicle for the realisation of the East Asian community.

During Tuesday's meeting, the leaders agreed than an effective and efficient arrangement to expedite customs release and clearance will promote trade facilitation, achieve better economic efficiency and effectiveness of ASEAN economies and further the establishment of the ASEAN economic community by the year 2020.

The leaders also showed keen interest to establish the legal framework for the establishing and implementing the ASEAN single window in member countries.

The members also agreed to adopt relevant internationally accepted standards, procedures, documents, technical details and formalities for the effective implementation of the ASEAN single window.
