Co-founder of Sun Microsystems and ace venture capitalist Vinod Khosla on Sunday said India could be a leader in many technology areas, particularly bio-technology, nano materials and energy technologies, unlike information technology where it started as a 'follower.'

"If we start serious research effort in many of the areas, we can start as a leader. In some sense, in IT we started as a follower," Khosla, who is among theĀ top two venture capitalists in the world, said.

Khosla, who is General Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, said the Indian government had done a 'fabulous job' in starting and encouraging many of the R&D institutions in the country which has led to development of 'lot of talent' and New Delhi could expand them further.

Khosla urged Indian companies to have a global outlook and look at parts they were competitive in.

Asked if he has renegotiated his partnership with the firm to part-time status, Khosla declined to comment, saying that US securities laws do not allow him to make comment while raising funds, other than in official documentation.

Earlier, Khosla lamented that none of the Indian companies have set up a unique model.

But he said India was entering a brand new phase as it had better and diverse talent and where some serious innovation could be made.

Khosla had said at an interaction at Hyderabad last week that in spite of election year poll scenario in the US, outsourcing to India would continue, but added that one has to be sensitive to the pain it causes to US employees.
