On February 5, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, India's human resource development minister, slashed the fees for the Indian Institutes of Management to Rs 30,000 a year from Rs 150,000 a year.
He has also asked the institutes to almost double their student intake.
The move capped the offensive that Dr Joshi has launched against the IIMs in the last few months.
In the past he has declared that the IIMs are 'elitist' institutions and even suggested that the IIM-administered Common Admission Test be scrapped, and a single test applicable to all management colleges be brought in its place.
