Normal monsoons will arrive over India on schedule in June, a state-run research body has predicted, providing hope that the agricultural-dependent economy will sustain its bullish growth.
The Bangalore-based CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation said that the monsoons will arrive in the country over the coast of the southern state of Kerala on May 31 or June 1.
India's vast agricultural sector is heavily dependant on the annual monsoon rains that usually sets in at the end of May or June and sweeps across the whole country.
India's economy is growing at a rate of over 8 per cent and failed or delayed rains would have derailed the momentum as the farm sector contributes to nearly a quarter of GDP.
The overall rains for the country may be 5 per cent below average in June. The southern States, except Tamil Nadu will get less rainfall than the rest of the country in June.
The India Meteorological Department will also announce its forecast on monsoons on April 15.
