In view of the grim power scenario in Maharashtra, the state government has evinced interest in procuring 750 MW electricity from the now defunct Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company's project in the coastal Konkan region.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Shinde said it was difficult to tell if the deal will materialise as the negotiations were at an early stage.
Moreover, the litigations with Enron are pending in the United States and the United Kingdom. He said that the government would take all steps to alleviate the power crunch situation in the state.
The state faces a shortfall of 1200 MW to 1600 MW power every day and the shortfall may rise to 2000 MW by next summer, Shinde said.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Board had initiated process to launch 250 MW generation unit each at Paras and Parli, Shinde said.
He added the MSEB had also entered into power purchase agreements with the National Thermal Power Corporation through the Power Trading Corporation for purchase of 500 MW extra power, and with BSES for 100 MW power.
Earlier, MSEB Chairman Asoke Basak said that the inquiry into the grid failure on October 6 has concluded that the problem occurred due to poor maintenance of the 400 KW line at Kalwa.
