RSS opposes oil sector divestment

Opposing Vajpayee government's divestment policy, the RSS on Friday said oil was in the strategic sector and should remain under state control.

Talking to reporters about the controversy pertaining to the sale of state-owned Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, RSS spokesman M G Vaidya said while engaging in public sector privatisation, the government should answer certain important questions, including whether profit-making PSUs should be privatised and public revenue allowed to go into private hands.

The government should also answer whether it was careful enough not to create private monopolies and also take into account the interests of the PSU workers.

He, however, clarified that in principle, the RSS was not against divestment. "We don't have an ideal socialist model before us," he said.
