Sena reacts sharply to Shourie's attack

Shiv Sena reacted sharply to Divestment Minister Arun Shourie's attack on it for criticising the divestment process and said that Shiv Sena approaching him in connection with the sale of a government hotel in Mumbai showed he was 'vulnerable' to pressures.

"Shourie's statement that Sena sought favours in the sell of Hotel Juhu Centaur to Ajit Kerkar only shows that the minister is vulnerable to pressure in matters of divestment," Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray told reporters in Mumbai.

Speaking on the occasion of the release of the performance report of Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi in Mumbai, Uddhav said: "Our party wants total transparency in divestment deals and we are not opposed to divestment per se."

The Shiv Sena is of the view that rampant re-selling would distort the purpose of divestment, he added.

Shourie's attack on Sena had come after Sena supremo Bal Thackeray raised doubts about the manner in which Hotel Airport Centaur, sold by the government for Rs 83 crore (Rs 830 million) to Batra Hospitalities, was later sold by the Batras to the Sahara Group for Rs 115 crore (Rs 1.15 billion).
