Chandrababu Naidu for further push to 2nd generation reforms

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday came out strongly in favour of giving a further push to second generation reforms in the country but declined to go into the controversy over divestment of oil sector PSUs HPCL and BPCL.

"I am not going into any individual sector. I am a staunch supporter of reforms, making it transparent and going step by step," he told a group of reporters when asked to comment on the move for divestment of PSUs in oil sector.

Asked specifically whether he was in favour of divestment in profit-making oil companies, the Telugu Desam Party supreme said: "This has to be analysed in detail. A wrong signal should not go to the people."

To a question on the possible crisis if the oil sector was in private hands during times of war, Naidu said: "You (government) can always take over. Government has absolute power."

Stating that his party was always for reforms, he said now that the country was passing through second generation reforms, the Government should analyse such reforms all over the world and work to eradicate poverty.

Citing the success story of privatisation in telecom sector, Naidu said the efficiency of the public sector units should also improve to compete the world over as the country was not in a position to pump in millions of rupees for their inefficiency.
